Exactly twenty years ago, on 16 February 2006, Ghent University (UGent) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) convened at the Palace of the Academies in Brussels for a milestone moment. The Rectors of both institutions, along with the Deans of the Faculty of Engineering, signed the agreement that launched a truly unique joint 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠.
What began in September 2006 as an 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 - together with KTH Royal Institute of Technology , the University of St Andrews , and Heriot-Watt University has since evolved into a strong and thriving UGent–VUB educational collaboration.
🌍 Over the past two decades, 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 500 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 from Belgium, Europe and the world at large have completed the programme. Many of them have built impactful careers in photonics, contributing to cutting-edge research and innovation in both academia and industry.
This initiative was pioneered by Prof. Irina Veretennicoff (VUB) and Prof. Roel Baets (UGent), who sought to combine the exceptional photonics expertise at both universities to create a programme that could stand alongside the world’s very best. Today, that ambition continues to be fulfilled, supported by one of Europe’s largest research ecosystems in photonics.
✨ 𝐓𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞’𝐬 20𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲, 𝐔𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐔𝐁 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 2026.
